Learn this easy secret to a more powerful Golf Swing

Setup for golf ball with a good golf swing angles and maintain these angles correctly in the golf swing is a big key to success in golf. Many golfers I teach will tend to do some thing good in their setup and their golf swings perhaps almost automatically without even knowing what exactly they are doing. This may be their natural athletic ability or instincts will come. Sometimes, a golfers do anything that is wrong, because it feels right or is comfortable. It is a crucial element to help a golfer has a more powerful and consistent golf swing and get better results that have no sharp angles with your posture.

There are three important angles should be present in your Setup position. The first angle comes from bending your knees. Some golfers bending the knees too much, while others do not give them enough. Checkpoint for how much to Bend your knees is to bend them, so they cover up your laces. When you look at your feet in your golf Setup position, you should not see your laces, but you will still see your toes, if you do this correctly. Bending the knees correctly will also help to get your attention more forward into the balls of your feet, where you will be able to do more balanced swings.

The other angle, will form in your installation comes from bending in the hips. This is sometimes a difficult for amateur or higher handicap golfers to get correct. In order to bend properly from your hips, you should basically stick your butt at the same time, keep your back straight. This is the angle between your thighs and your body. Rounding the back is a weak Setup position and lead to a weaker swing nose. Remember no sharp angles will produce more power and distance.

Finally, the third important setup angle between forearms and your golf club shaft. The arms will hang down quite straight in the Setup, but these should be extended. When you extend your arms in your installation, you want them to be equal, but not locked, where they would be stiff and tight. So extend your arms down, but do not lock your elbows. Hands will rest nicely down, and there should be an angle between the Club and your arms. Some golfers have problems with getting this setup correct angle. There is an easy way to get this right. When you setup up to golf ball, take your golf club and extend it straight up. If your hands in the right position, should butt end of golf grip hit right on your belt buckle or belt line. If your hands are too high, and you do this drill down to the club hit higher against the stomach or chest. And if your hands are too low from bending too much, the angle between your lower arms and club shaft and want to be too large.

These three Setup angle will really help improve your golf swing, as long as you make your swing and looks at the same time maintain these angles. Standing or dipping down in golf swing is a common problem for some golfers try and stay in your angles or bo level and same height throughout your golf swing and golf ball hit you get way more easily and smoothly at the same time, add extra power and distance.

Jul 29, Hooking Iron Shots -( except Pw)

by John Browning
(Fresno, CA)

I am 57 years old and playing golf 14 years. For years I struggled with a slice, then a fade, then straight, which I loved.

Now all of a sudden this season all irons but AW and PW hook. I have been as low as a 7 handicap last year.

I play with Titleist AP-1 s Regular Shaft Dynamic Gold HL and Vokey 54 and 58. I am 6 foot 1 inch and my arms hang low. I have a very flat swing.

Recently I was hooking all of my irons – so went to a Pro and he suggested moving closer to the ball – standing more upright and bringing my left arm closer to my body and having the irons bent 2 1/2 degrees flat.

I hit them on a lie board and achieved perfect center contact. This worked great for one round and I shot a 78 from the Blue/Mid T. I hit every green in regulation.

Yesterday, I went to same course and hooked every mid iron and long iron. Then started hooking the Two hybrids Cobra DWS 24 and 22 degree.

My driver is a Taylormade R7, and I hit it consistently straight, except for a very playable slight draw.

The iron hooks, miss greens by 10 yards and just roll and roll.

What can I do to eliminate the hook and get back to a straight or slight draw?

Louis Answer

Hi John,

May I suggest you first take a look at my hook shot page. I have a few solutions and reasons for hooking the ball.

However, I do have a few concerns about what you have said here. Your 6 foot 1, swing flat and your arms hang low.

This sounds like a recipe for hooking!

It is difficult to give you an accurate answer to your problem without seeing your swing but I will give you a few possible solutions from what you have said here.

You definitely need to focus on your posture. It has a direct influence on your swing plane, swing path, and balance.

It is best to find a good comfortable starting posture first, before making any swing adjustments.

A good posture at address will help to maintain a good posture during the swing, which is so critical for consistency in swing path and swing plane and hence, direction of the ball.

In a correct posture the arms need to hang down from the shoulders with the butt of the club below the middle of your shoulders. Standing in front of a mirror with the mirror looking down the target line you help you check your positions.

When looking at your set up from a down the line view, the butt end of your club should extend through your hips. If the hands are below this line they will encourage the club face to be too closed through impact.

This brings me to the grip. How are your hands placed on the club? Do you have a strong grip? If so, weaken the left hand slightly and the right hand. Find that neutral position for both hands. Your can check the golf grip page for the correct hand positions on the handle.

To recap, work with a better posture at address and weaken your grip. This should help to swing more on a natural swing plane that is best for you.

I am very keen to work closer and offer a better service to my visitors on a long term basis, and in order for me to do this I will need to see your swing on video. Get more details on online golf lessons and about my FREE comprehensive video swing analysis!

Sep 18, The Correct Golf Grip and How to Grip Golf Club

A proper golf grip plays the most important role in the golf swing, simply because it connects your hands with the club, and the feel of swinging the club comes from your hands.

I often asked my students if they feel the weight of the club during a swing.

Most of the time the answer is no. One student said that he had never thought about it. Big mistake.

I prefer to talk about the “placement” of the hands on the club rather than “grip”. Reason being that golfers associate the golf grip with tightness or tension.

The hands need to be placed in a way to promote feeling for the club head. There role is to work together as one unit allowing you to swing the club as efficiently and as powerfully as possible, and deliver the club face squarely into impact.

The correct golf grip pressure points and having a proper golf grip are essential for solid ball striking, and consistency.
Lets start with the left hand placement for right hand players.

Lefties just do the reverse of what I am showing here, it really is no different.

Notice the angle of the left hand. This allows you to place the club over the base of the fingers with the pad on top of the handle.

A gentle squeeze by the last three fingers of the left hand is the only pressure that is required.

The feeling here is that the handle is now snug in the fingers with the thumb resting
on top of the handle.

The fingers should not touch the inside of your hand but be close to it. A golf grip size that is just right for you is extremely important. If the fingers touch the handle, the grip is too thin for you. Alternately, too thick and it will slow your hand action through impact and leave the club face open.

The correct pressure points are illustrated in the picture with a “P” written on my fingers.

You will be surprised how firm the left hand is now without holding too tight. Give the club a tug with the other hand and test it.

A face view of the left hand showing the thumb
pointing straight down the handle at the name.

In golfing terms this is a neutral position of the hand.
Meaning neither to weak or strong.

This left hand position gives you the best possible
chance of achieving the correct hand action during your swing, and squaring up the club face at impact.

Practice it till it feels comfortable.

It is most important to get the correct placement of the left hand on the handle of the club. The pictures clearly show the wrong and correct placements. This position will help a great deal for fixing a golf slice.

The wrist is on top of the grip of the club, giving you full control of the club head during the swing, allowing you to deliver the club face in a square position at impact.

The right fingers wrap themselves
underneath the shaft with the small
finger overlapping the trigger
finger of the left hand.

The correct feeling here is the palm of the right hand fits snug behind the left hand and not on top. The pressure points being the middle two fingers of the right as shown.

The right thumb resting on top of the left thumb.

Palms face each other and parallel to
the club head.

With the hands in this position you will be able to have power and control over your swing. A perfect golf grip.

This position of the right hand on the handle determines a correct hinging of the wrist in the back swing.

There is no doubt that a good grip will help you swing much more efficiently.

The Overlap Grip

The most widely used grip and the most comfortable in my opinion.

Simply linking the hands together.

My favourite grip. Nine fingers are wrapped around the handle. The more the better in my opinion.

This grip is also commonly known as the “Vardon Grip,” which is named after the famous British golfer of the early 1900′s Harry Vardon. He used it and made it more popular amongst other players too.

The Interlocking Golf Grip

This grip should only be used if you cannot overlap.

Interlock the fingers only once you have done the
overlap,
otherwise the position of the hands change which can spell disaster. The palms will not be facing the club face.

The problem is, you have less fingers around the handle than the overlap.

The Hammer Grip

Is great for senior golfers because it gives more freedom in the hand action. The same pressures in the fingers apply here as mentioned above.

Lastly, placing the hands correctly helps to give you a good swing plane, squaring the club at impact, and hitting straighter shots.

Check it regularly and make sure the hands are in the right places.

Oct 9, Right Hand Grip

by Rajinder
(Hyderabad,India)

I use an interlock grip and try to hit straight, but most of the shots land to right side. Secondly, when ever I try to go for good distance, I tighten the grip which prompts my shots to go to the left.

What am I doing wrong?

Louis Reply

Thanks for a great question!

There can be a few causes for your ball going right, but you need to first make sure your left hand is in the correct position on the club.

It would be pointless applying my advice here without the correct hand placements.

On the golf grip page I show the correct and incorrect placement of the left hand. Make sure your left is correctly placed towards the fingers and not the palm of the hand.

Correct placement becomes critical when the club is being swung, because when the club and left arm straighten out at impact a correct placement will ensure a square club face at impact. If not it will be open most of the time.

Next, check to see if your right hand palm is also facing parallel to your intended target. My experience with students who use the interlock grip is that they tend to lock the fingers in first and then the right palm faces to the right of your intended target.

Rather get the right palm to face the left one then do the finger interlock.

Check to see where your right palm is facing and adjust it accordingly.(it needs to be also parallel to your intended target, and facing your left palm).

With both hands on the club check if your club face is square. The club face can often change direction when placing your right hand in the interlock position. The key here is not let the club and left hand move when placing the right hand on, keep it still.

Tightening the grip (or right hand) does not help to get more distance Rajinder, it is a swing killer!

Nearly every player I have seen going for more distance, 99 percent of the time rushes the hands from the top of the swing. This action closes the club face at impact, causing, pulls, and sometimes severe hooked shots that nose dive to the left.

A tight right hand will encourage a smothered shot to the left.

Try to feel the grip pressure as constant as possible in the specific fingers I have mentioned. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being loose and 10 being as tight as possible) feel both hands are about 5. Not too tight and not too loose.

Maintaining a constant swing speed throughout the swing is not easy to accomplish for most golfers, but forcing yourself to swing through the ball and finish, rather than “hit” will pay huge dividends for you.

Strive to swing the club through the ball and hold your finish. This will ensure a properly timed shot with no rushing.

If your problem persists you may want to check the causes and fixes for the push shot, and pull shot.

Give us feedback sometime on your progress.
