If you want to add distance and accuracy to your golf swing, think about it this way: you require maximum flexibility to achieve a full range of motion from inception to the point of contact with the ball. Your golf driver swing is addressed from a bit of a different position, it’s true, but it still requires the same flexibility.
Many golfers do not recognize the point at which adding more power to the swing actually results in diminished accuracy. This is because they have gone out of what might be called their "balance zone."
Do You Understand Your Golf Swing Flexibility?
How often have you found yourself in this situation? You are coming up to a really long hole, say a par four. You are after distance so you try to make it happen by going farther than you’re used to on your backswing and then really put horsepower into the downswing.
I don’t have to remind you of what happened next, do I? Not only did the ball not go where you wanted to put it, but it didn’t go as far as you wanted it to go!
What went wrong with your golf driver swing in this instance? You tried to get a result out of your body that it wasn’t prepared to deliver. This is an extremely tempting thing to try.
Don’t we all have the tendency to push the envelope a bit? That’s part of the fun of the game! But the fact of the matter is that if the body is not prepared, it won’t deliver the sought after result. So what can you do about it?
Try Golf Stretching Exercises
Good golf stretching exercises target the muscles used on the swing. The primary ones involved in this case are the core muscles involved in rotation, the muscles on the back and the lateral side of your leading shoulder.
Limbering up these muscles prior to the game will go a long way towards maximizing your golf driver swing performance. What else can you do to achieve your goal?
Beef Up Your Core Strength
It is essential that you stay behind the ball during the complete execution of the golf driver swing. This is the only way to accurately achieve the distance and power needed to take strokes off your game. To make this happen, look to your core strength.
Although your upper body remains static momentarily when you initiate the downswing, your lower body begins an explosive rotational movement. If your core muscles that are involved the rotation are weak, it will be impossible to maintain the balance needed for control, power and accuracy.
If your core muscles are strong, your golf driver swing will be crisp and you will be truly in control of the delivery. How can you develop the strength and flexibility needed for a dynamic and accurate game?
Implement Your Routine of Stretching and Strength Training
Implementing and religiously following a stretching and strength training routine centered around rotational movements will do wonders not only for the improvement of your golf driver swing, but for your health in general.
If you already have knowledge on these topics or if you feel comfortable doing your own research then by all means get to work! If not, the best thing to do is consult with a personal trainer.
Explain your needs and expectations and he or she should have you on the road in one session. An extended relationship is not needed; one session will yield a plan that is golf driver swing specific. Be sure that your trainer has certifications. At some gyms the "trainers" are just salesmen.
If you follow your routine in a dedicated manner, your swing and your game will improve in no time. Make a mental or written note of your improvements on specific holes at your favorite course. This is a great way to provide the positive reinforcement needed to stick with your routine.
